In a continuous casting machine cooling water from sprays in a secondary cooling zone is removed from the surface of a casting 1 by air jets emerging from manifolds 3, 7 that are mounted on elements that are movable complementary with any lateral movement of the casting 1. In the embodiment described, the long sides of a rectangular casting 1 have manifolds 3 mounted on the chassis of a set of guide rollers 2 and movable by hydraulic jacks (6) (Fig. 3, not shown) and the short sides have manifolds 7 mounted on carriages 8 movable by hydraulic jacks 12 and having rollers 11 for bearing on the casting 1. Air is fed to the manifolds via pipes 16 and conduits 17 formed in the corners of a vessel 14 that receives the removed water. The manifolds may be spring urged towards the casting.
