[Also in Division B3] A two-speed ratchet gear for the step-by-step driving of rolled metal stock cooling, hardening, or transporting devices comprises rockers 5, 19 pivoted about a shaft 1, to which a ratchet wheel 2 is secured, for angular oscillation under the control of drive means 8, 20, respectively, a pawl 6 on the rocker 5 movable by an actuator 10 into and out of engagement with the ratchet wheel during a driving stroke and a return stroke respectively, and an opposed pair of pawls 11, 12 on the rocker 19 movable by actuators 15, 16 into engagement with the ratchet wheel during the return stroke of the pawl 6 either to lock the ratchet wheel, the rocker 19 remaining stationary, or to impart a second step movement to the ratchet wheel during the return stroke of the pawl 6 to double the mean speed of the shaft 1. The driving means 8, 20 and actuators 10, 15, 16 may be hydraulic, electric, electro-pneumatic or electrohydraulic, and may be subject to an overall automatic control. The flanks 3a, 3b of the ratchet teeth 3 are parallel to radii passing through the centres of the respective teeth.
