The invention comprises the novel alkaloids ciliaphylline of empirical formula C23H30N2O5, melting point 222-223 DEG C., rhynchociline of empirical formula C23H30N2O5, melting poin 178-180 DEG C., and mitraciliantine of empirical formula C23H30N2O4, melting point 140-141 DEG C., which are produced by extracting the dried, powdered leaves of mitragyna ciliata with alcohol, acidifying the concentrated, syrupy extract with glacial acetic acid and diluting it with water, adding ammonia to the filtered acid solution until alkaline, and extracting the alkaline solution with chloroform to give a residue of crude alkaloids which are fractionally separated. Pharmaceutical compositions having antitussive and analgetic properties, which may be administered orally or parenterally, contain as active ingredient ciliaphylline, rhynchociline or mitraciliatine or a non-toxic, pharmaceutically acceptable, acid addition salt thereof.
