1,143,797. Ferrocene cyclic thioethers. COLGATE-PALMOLIVE CO. 6 Oct., 1966 [7 Oct., 1965], No. 44751/66. Heading C2J. [Also in Division A5] The invention comprises ferrocene cyclic thioethers, which may be prepared by an adaption of the method used to prepare ferrocene cyclic ethers in Specification 1,143,796. The process to prepare thioethers of ferrocene consists in treating a ferrocene diol with a concentrated lower aliphatic acid (formic, acetic or propionic acid) and a small amount of mineral acid as catalyst in the presence of H 2 S, which is generally bubbled through the solution during the reaction. The acid catalyst is preferably sulphuric acid; however, HCl, BF 3 , HF, HNO 3 , polyphosphoric acid or p-toluene sulphonic acid may be used. The ferrocene diol starting material may be prepared by reduction of the corresponding diacyl with LiAlH 4 , phenyl lithium, sodium borohydride, an alkyl magnesium halide or with H 2 in the presence of a platinum or palladium catalyst. Preparation of the intermediate ferrocene diols, ferrocene diacyls, ferrocene dicarboxylic acids and ferrocene itself are also described.
