The core B, of a gas cooled, heavy water moderated reactor is enclosed in a prestressed concrete pressure vessel, A, together with a heat exchanger, C, and the charge devices, 26. The carbon dioxide coolant is urged through the horizontal colandria tubes 30, vertically upwards through the shields, 34, and into the duct 40. Coolant flows downwards through the exchanger tubes 37 and into the colandria tubes through the thermally insulating partitions 32. The gas blowers are arranged radially in the thickness of the wall of the vertical unit 16 and above the horizontal unit 14.
