962,254. Feeding webs. P. C. RIEGGER. Feb. 16, 1961 [Feb. 20, 1960], No. 5771/61. Heading B6B. A web-splicing apparatus is of the kind in which an operative supply roll and a replacement supply roll are mounted for rotation, such that the replacement web can be spliced to the operative supply roll upon running out of the operative web. An abutment is on one side of the replacement roll and when splicing is to be effected the replacement roll is set into rotation and the abutment engages a member for setting the cutting and splicing means into operation. A replacement web roll 3 is accelerated by a roller 8, such that its peripheral speed equals the linear speed of a web 7, unwound from an expiring roll, prior to splicing the two webs. A stop 4, positioned in an opening 16, Fig. 2 (not shown), in a plate secured to one side of the replacement roll, actuates a trip for a splicing roller 12 and knife 13 for severing the end of the expiring web. The leading end 5 of the replacement web carries an adhesive covering strip. The web ends may be secured by one or two strips, Figs. 1A, 1B, 1C (all not shown). In a modification, a stop 4, Fig. 3, engages a contact 17 which energizes an electromagnet 18 which actuates a detent lever 19 which releases a knife 13. The knife 13 co-operates with a counter-bar 20SP1/SP to cut the expiring web. Actuation of a hand lever 20 in the direction F causes an arm 23 to rock an arm 24. The arm 24 through a spring 25 leaves the knife-carrying lever 26 in position ready for operation upon subsequent energization of the electromagnet 18. The cam 24 carries a splicing brush 12SP1/SP which splices the expiring web to the replacement web. A drive roller 29 is rocked into engagement with the roll 3 by an arm 27 engaging a spring 28 to accelerate the roll 3. An adhesive splicing strip 34, Fig. 5, may be secured to the roller 12 by suction or adhesive applied to areas 35.
