In the production of hollow metal bodies from lead, zinc or their alloys, particulate metal is impact extruded into the desired shape. The metal may be fed directly into the extrusion die or be first compressed into a pellet, which is lubricated with lanolin before extrusion. Oxidation of the particles may be controlled by varying the atmosphere in which they are produced; oxide particles may also be mixed with the metal particles. An example is given for backwardly extruding a pellet of zinc alloy into a battery case. Reference is also made to the extrusion of lead.
