A high voltage winding, of which a radial section is shown in Fig. 4, has at least two shielding rings 24, 25 rigidly connected together and between them at least one channel 26 for cooling fluid. The rings are coated with insulation 28, 29, and may be symmetrical as in Fig. 4, where the inner part of the winding is divided into two parallel connected cylinders 21, 22. Alternatively, they may be assymmetrical (34, 35, Fig. 5, not shown) where a single inner winding cylinder (32) is used, surrounded by a screen (33), the electrical connections in this case being arranged as in Fig. 3 (not shown) where the screen (19) is connected to the single winding cylinder. The rings may be electrically connected, or may be insulated from one another and allowed to assume different potentials. The rings may be formed by a conductive coating on a base of fibre-glass or of a combination of fibre-glass and resin impregnated paper.
