1,060,761. Cable twisting machines. SOC. ANON. GEOFFROY-DELORE. April 1, 1964 [April 11, 1963], No. 13523/64. Heading D1T. A machine for making multi-layer cables Fig. 1a draws its core filaments 2 from fixed supply units 1, the core filaments being drawn through a distribution grid 4 and a die plate 5 before entering a twisting tube 7 that is coaxial with and rotates in synchronism with a further twisting tube 13. Freely suspended on the tubes 7, 13 in a non-rotating cradle 19 carrying a plurality of filament supply units 21. The twisted core 6 in the tube 7 is withdrawn from one side of the tube 7 and then guided past the cradle 19 by pulleys 20a to c. Pulleys 20d, 20c then guide the core 6 in the reverse direction through the tube 13 and back into the twist tube 7 where the filaments 22 from the cradle 19 are fed through a non-rotating grid 25 and then stranded onto the core 6. The resulting cable 27, in the twist tube 7, passes out through the side of the tube 7 and is guided past the cradle 19 back into the tube 13 by pulleys 20a, 20e, 20f. The pulleys 29a 29b prevent undue distortion of the core 6 and cable 27 by centrifugal' forces. There may be a plurality of the pulleys 29a, 29b between the tubes 7 and 13. Further layers may be added to the cable 27 by extending the machinery to include, for each layer, further rotary units comprising twisting spindles 7, 13, with their associated cradle 19 and pulleys 20a to f, 29a, 29b. When the resulting cable leaves the last of the rotary units described above it may be directly taken up by a receiver assembly R, Fig. 1b. Alternatively, a plate or cage 31 rotating with the cable 27 carries a plurality of spools 33a, 33b and pulleys 35a, 35b that distribute strands 34a, 34b around the cable without strading them. The resulting assembly passes through a distribution grid 40 receiving strands 42 from a stationary supply 41, there being a die plate 43 by which the strands 42 are wound around the cable 27 and the strands 34a, 34b. When the resulting assembly leaves the die plate 43 it passes through a member P that gives the cable a sectoral form, for example by hammering or rolling the cable, before being wound up on the drum T.
