A composition in tablet form for use as a dental impression material by mixing with water comprises a soluble alginate and a salt which will react therewith in aqueous medium to produce an insoluble alginate. To use the composition, a tablet as above and water may be introduced into a tubular capsule which is then agitated, and the resulting composition is then forced out of the capsule by means of a piston. In the examples, conventional tableting procedures are used on compositions comprising sodium alginate, and (1) sodium phosphate and calcium sulphate; (2) ammonium citrate, china clay and calcium sulphate, and (3) diatomaceous earth, lead silicate and tetrasodium pyrophosphate.
