Expanding device for the cutting groove of a tree to be felled and for turning the felled trunk with a wedge-shaped breaker plate at one end of a gripper bar, while at a suitable distance from the plate, a turning hook is hinged to the gripper rod by means of a swivel arm. A lock-and-release device (8, 9) holds the pivot arm (3) and the turning hook (5) in the rest position and guides them there. It is released by the turning hook when this returns into the working position. The pivot arm has two components (3) which are hinged with the grip at their inner end, while at their outer end they grip the turning hook. Projection on the components or the grip and the turning hook form the locking and release device together with the spring action of the components.
