Additional air is supplied to the mixture formed in a carburetter under the control of a valve or valves adapted to be actuated in response to movement of the carburetter throttle valve and engine suction. The additional air supply system may be formed in the carburetter or in the form of a member 22 adapted to be bolted between the carburetter 10 and the engine intake manifold and having a bore 28 therethrough forming part of the engine mixture induction duct. In the embodiment shown the member 22 is formed of two plates 23, 24 defining a bore for a valve rod 37 and ducts 31 and 32 communicating with the bore 28 via a recess 35 and slots 34. The valve bore intersects an air inlet 36 and the additional air inlet duct 31 and the rod 37 is connected to the throttle valve shaft 39 by a linkage 42, 43, 44. A groove 40 and a further reduced diameter portion of the rod 37, which co-operates with an adjustable screw 45 in the idling position of the throttle valve 14, are moved into register with the inlet to the duct 31 as the throttle valve is opened and allow maximum air-flow through the duct at certain throttle valve positions, Fig.4 (not shown). The duct 32 communicates with a chamber (59), Fig. 3 (not shown), containing a member (51) which is spring- biased upwardly into contact with a lever (51) which is spring-biased downwardly. The chamber is closed by a diaphragm (56) coupled to the member (51) which, when subject to a predetermined vacuum on engine over-running through the duct 32, moves the member downwardly so that a lug (54) on one end of the lever (51) engages a groove 41 in the rod 37 and holds the rod with the groove 40 in register with the inlet to the duct 31. The rod may be held by lever (98), Fig.5 (not shown), coupled to a piston (104) which is subjected to the vacuum in the duct 32. The vacuum operated device 50 may permit a spring- biased lever (76), Fig. 6 (not shown), to open a valve (80) communicating with the duct 31. In a further embodiment, Figs.7 and 8 (not shown), a pressure responsive device (50) acts on a spring-biased lever (76) which opens an additional air inlet valve (80). The spring-biasing in the device (50) is adjusted so that the valve (80) is partially opened at idling and open to allow maximum additional air-flow at over-running. A leafspring (90) is mounted on the lever (76) to be engaged by the throttle valve actuating lever 16 when the throttle valve is fully open to open the valve (80).
