Heading B7C. A tyre-building machine includes gripping means 2 movable by a piston and cylinder 10, 11 to transfer tyre ply fabric to gripping means 3. In use, the free edge of parallel cord fabric (not shown) lying on a tray 23 is passed between movable and fixed plates 4, 5 respectively of the means 2 and positioned level with a cutting blade 24. Electromagnetic coils 7 are energized to attract plate 4 to plate 5 and grip the fabric, and the fabric is transferred to gripping means 3. Coils 7SP1/SP are energized to attract plate 13 to plate 14, coils 7 are de-energized and means 2 return to their original position. A stitching roll 1 is moved by piston and cylinder 20 to press the fabric against the building drum 22, coils 7SP1/SP are de-energized and the drum is rotated anti-clockwise through 10-15 degrees to stitch the ply end. Rotation of the drum is reversed until a required length of fabric has been applied then the drum is stopped, coils 7 are energized and blade 24 cuts off the ply fabric, the free end being stitched down by additional rotation of the drum. The mechansms then return to their initial positions.
