Hydrocarbon mixtures containing large amounts of butene-1 and small amounts of butadiene-1,3 are selectively hydrogenated to remove butadiene by contact with hydrogen in the presence of a supported copper/nickel catalyst having a metal content of 2-60 wt. per cent and a copper/nickel weight ratio of from 10 : 1 to 1:1. Suitable supports are silica gel, pumice, kaolin, alumina and magnesia, and the catalyst may contain modifiers, e.g. chromium, chromium oxide, magnesium or an alkali metal phosphate.
