Apparatus for maintaining uniform sizes of gas bubble pistons dividing into segments a liquid stream passing through a capillary reactor operating at elevated temperature, for example the eluate from chromatography column 2 which separates amino acids, cornprises capillary reactor tube 10 submerged in heating bath 11, measuring cell 13, for example a photometric cell, and pressurized gas container 19 connected to the measuring cell. Gas container 19 may be .pressurized by connection to elevated liquid reservoir 23 as shown. The gas for the gas bubble pistons may be supplied from pressurized container 19 directly or via line 26 from a resilient-walled receptacle 27 which can contain a gas other than that in container 19. In the embodiment of Figure 2 (not shown) the bubble pistons are removed before the flowing stream reaches the measuring cell. The stream leaving capillary 10 flows into an inlet lobby (29) which traps the gas bubbles and allows the liquid flow to continue into the measuring cell. Reducing valve (34) controls the pressure applied to the liquid stream through line (17). In the embodiment of Fig. 3 (not shown), the segmented stream leaving the measuring cell .passes to separating vessel (37) from which separated gas and liquid flow through lines (39), (38) respectively to pressurized gas container (19), which may be arranged at a lower level than vessel (37). In the embodiment of Fig. 4 (not shown), the segmented .stream from capillary 10 is supplied to separating vessel (40) from which the liquid stream flows to the measuring cell. Liquid overflow pipe-line (42) from the measuring cell communicates with pressurized gas container 19.
