[Also in Division H2] An overhead crane or runway telpher incorporating a wheeled carriage 10 constructed to travel along a fixed track 12 is driven by at least one induction motor which comprises a rectilinear stator unit 14 mounted on the carriage and a metal disc rotor 15 drivingly connected to a carriage supporting wheel 11. Instead of the direct connection shown, the rotor may be fixed to the wheel shaft (16), Fig. 2, or to a separate shaft (19) geared to the wheel or wheels Fig. 4. The motor speed may be varied by adjusting the stator unit radially of the rotor.
