1,158,891. Vehicle Steering gear. CAM GEARS (LUTON) Ltd. 21 Sept. 1966 [26 Jan., 1966], No. 3463/66. Heading B7H. A power-assisted vehicle rack-and-pinion steering gear comprises a slidable rack bar 1 connected at 5 to a second bar 11 which slides parallel to, and through the same distance as the rack bar, and forms part of the linkage between steerable road wheels (not shown), and double-acting hydraulic piston-and-cylinder means acting directly on one of the bars 11, 1, and actuated under the control of valve means (not shown) in response to steering effort. In the embodiment shown, the piston 14A is mounted on the second bar 11, and the cylinder 14 is fixed in the double-barrelled structure 3. The valve means may sense the pinion-rack reaction, or the steering torque. In a further embodiment, the connection 5 is external to the casing. In another embodiment, the bars are interconnected by racks on both bars and an intervening pinion. Either bar may be connected by its ends to the steerable road wheels.
