The invention comprises dyestuffs of the formula wherein rings A and B may be substituted by halogen atoms, alkyl, alkoxy, NO 2 , CN, CF 3 , alkylsulphonyl or sulphonamido groups, R is an alkyl or aralkyl group; R 1 and R 2 are H, alkyl, aryl, aralkyl or cycloalkyl groups which may be substituted by halogen, alkyl, alkoxy, phenoxy, OH, CN, CF 3 , NH 2 , acylamino, alkyl- or dialkyl-amino, phenyl-, N-alkyl-N-phenyl- or aralkyl-amino groups or R 1 and R 2 together with the N atom form a heterocyclic nucleus, and X is a monovalent anion. They may be obtained by reacting an amine of the formula HNR 1 R 2 with a dye of the formula wherein R 3 is a Cl or Br atom. Examples are given for the production of the dyes. They are useful for dyeing fibres based on polymers or copolymers of acrylonitrile. Dyes of Formula III may be obtained by treating compounds of the formula with alkylating or aralkylating agents. In an example, 4,5-dichloro-l,8-naphthalic anhydride is condensed with 4-methoxy- 1,2. diamino-benzene sulphate and the resulting dichloro-naphthoylene - methoxy - benzimidazole is alkylated with methyl sulphate to give, N - methyl - dichloro - naphthoylene - methoxybenzimidazolium methyl sulphate.
