A forward attack coal cutter pick has a shank extending substantially at right angles to an arm 10 extending forwardly of the shank when the shank is secured in a holder 16 and terminating in a cutter tip 11 that is wider than the arm. Preferably the tip, arm and shank are so formed as to be symmetrical about a common plane.
