Steam for use in hydrocarbon reformingprocess (at 14) is produced by condensing, at 21, 23, unreacted steam in the gases from the process and passing hot water with CO 2 in solution from the condensers 21, 23 to a stripping column 2 for counter-current flow to steam raised in a unit 1, the stripped water being passed as feedwater to the unit 1, and steam and CO 2 being passed from the column 2 to the reactor 14 via a superheater 8. Condensing at 21 is by direct contact with demineralized water supplied at 36 and water from a separator 27 which follows an indirect heat exchanger 23. Hot combustion gases from 14 traverse the superheater 8 and a heat exchanger 38 which, like a heat exchanger 19, is connected by water tubes 42, 43 with the unit 1. A dosing chemical, e.g. NaOH, NaSO 3 , hydrazine, may be supplied in aqueous solution at 44, and steam for heating may be withdrawn at 45 from the column 2.
