Novel cyclic thioimidates of the general formula FORM:1102466/C2/1 wherein R is defined as follows: (1) a thiophene moiety of the formula FORM:1102466/C2/2 wherein R1 is a hydrogen or a chlorine atom or a methyl group and R2 is a hydrogen atom or a methyl group, n is 2 or 3, X is bonded to position 2 or 3 of the thiophene nucleus and when n is 2 then X is ethylene or vinylene and when n is 3 then X is alkylene up to 3 carbon atoms or is vinylene, and R1 is bonded to position 2 and R2 to position 5 when X is bonded to the 3-position or R1 is bonded to position 5 and R2 to position 3 when X is bonded to the 2-position, and (2) 2-furyl, 5-isothiazolyl, 4-thiazolyl, 5-thiazolyl, 1-methyl-5-pyrazolyl, 1 - methyl - 2 - pyrrolyl, 2 - thiazolyl, 3-methyl-2 - furyl, 4 - methyl - 5 - isothiazolyl, 5 - methyl- 4 - thiazolyl, 4 - methyl - 5 - thiazolyl, 1,4- dimethyl - 5 - pyrazolyl, 1,3 - dimethyl - 2 - pyrrolyl phenyl and 2-substituted phenyl wherein the substituent is chloro, bromo, iodo, fluoro, nitro, hydroxy, methyl or ethyl, 3-substituted phenyl wherein the substituent is chloro, fluoro, iodo, bromo and hydroxy, 4-substituted phenyl, wherein the substituent is chloro, bromo, iodo, fluoro, hydroxy, methyl or ethyl, and wherein n is 3, are obtained (a) by condensing an alkyl nitrile (or the corresponding imido ester of the nitrile) of the formula R(CH2)mCN, wherein R is as defined above and m is 1, 2 or 3, with 2-mercapto ethylamine or 3-mercapto propylamine, (b) by cyclizing with phosphorus pentasulphide an alkanoylamide of the general formula FORM:1102466/C2/3 wherein R is as defined above, m is 1, 2 or 3 and p is 1 or 2, (c) by condensing a thiophene carboxaldehyde of the formula R.CHO, wherein R is as defined above with 2-methyl-thiazoline or 2-methyldihydrothiazine. Compositions containing the above compounds having anthelmintic activity may be administered in human and veterinary medicine, orally or parenterally.
