Novel compounds (I) in which R 1 is H or methyl; and XSP+/SP is HSP+/SP alkali metal cation or NH 3 RSP+/SP where R is H, alkyl or cycloalkyl are prepared by reacting compounds (II) with a reactive derivative of sulphuric acid e.g. chloro- or amido-sulphonic acid or a sulphur trioxide adduct; followed where necessary by conversion of the acid into its salts. Pharmaceutical compositions comprise a compound (I) together with a suitable carrier for enteral or parenteral administration and are used as laxatives.
