The contaminated water is passed through a reaction chamber where it is admixed intimately with air, and contacted with an active carbon catalyst to accelerate the oxidation processes. Pref. the reaction time may be speeded up by passing the water thus treated into a chamber located behind the above reaction chamber, where it is admixed with Nacl in amt. such that the concn. of excess Cl2 is about 5 mg/l. The water is then subjected to simultaneous residual oxidation and neutralisation in another chamber, and finally passed through an active C filter.
