Apparatus for coating electrical resistors with powder or paint particles comprises means for producing a cloud of charged particles and means for masking part of the articles not to be coated by means of gas streams. As shown in Fig. 1, electrical resistors are carried on conveyors 15, 16 over a an air fluidised bed 1 having electrical discharge points 3. Longitudinal enclosures 6, 7 are provided enclosing the conveyors and air entering through pipes 10 passes along the enclosures to prevent deposition of coating medium on the ends of the conductors 13, 14. In modifications (not shown) the enclosure may be sandwiched between two narrow chambers and air flow from one to the other provides a curtain to prevent the influx of particles into the longitudinal chamber. In a further modification an air and electrostatic spray gun replaces the fluidised bed. A vibrator may be provided on the longitudinal chamber to shake off excess coating powder.
