[Also in Divisions B2, B3 and C5] Coating compositions for use in metal working comprise a solution in an organic solvent of (a) at least one copolymer of one or more acrylic and/or methacrylic esters with a minor amount of one or more carboxylic acids containing an ethylenically unsaturated linkage, (b) a chlorinated paraffin having a chlorine content of 20 to 30% by weight and, optionally, (c) a conventional lubricant for reducing metal to metal friction, such as a mineral, oily or waxy lubricant, e.g. graphite. The acrylic esters of component (a) are suitably derived from aliphatic or cycloaliphatic alcohols having up to 18 carbon atoms; specified acid monomers are acrylic, methacrylic, crotonic, maleic and furmaric acids. Component (b) is preferably a chlorination product of a linear petroleum fraction having an average molecular weight of from 144 to 562. As organic solvent, a non- inflammable chlorinated hydrocarbon is preferred, e.g. trichloroethylene, 1,1,1-trichloroethane, perchloroethylene, methylene dichloride or carbon tetrachloride, and also other halohydrocarbons such as trifluorotrichloroethane; small amounts of other organic solvents may be admixed with these. The compositions may additionally contain a dyestuff. Examples illustrate compositions wherein the solvent is trichloroethylene and the copolymer is #- ethoxy-ethyl methacrylate/methacrylic acid or n - butyl methacrylate / methyl methacrylate/ methacrylic acid copolymer.
