A spin finish composition comprises 3 to 50% by weight of a low temperature lubricant, 3 to 30% of a high-temperature lubricant and 2 to 12% of polyvinyl alcohol, the balance being an emulsifier. The low temperature lubricant may be glycerol mono-acetate or the liquid lubricants disclosed in Specification 934,893, such as vegetable, marine or petroleum oils, polyalkylene glycols, C1- 22 fatty acid esters, triglycerides and phosphate esters, and numerous examples are listed. The high temperature lubricant may be microcrystalline or paraffin wax, polyethylene, wax-like natural esters, phthalimides and ethylene oxide polymers such as "Carbowax" (Registered Trade Mark). The emulsifier may be an amine soap formed from oleic acid or other acid with more than eight carbon atoms and aminomethylpropanol or other alkanolamine and may include a non-ionic ingredient, e.g. a polyoxyethylene ether or ester of a long-chain alcohol, thiol, alkylated phenol or acid. A preferred non-ionic ingredient is the adduct of 1 mol. tridecyl alcohol and about 9 moles ethylene oxide. An aqueous emulsion comprising 6 to 23% of the formulation is applied to textile yarns or filaments to be used in reinforcing rubber in tyres or belts.
