A nutritionally adequate non-residual dietary composition for reducing the level of intestinal microflora comprises a major proportion by weight of one or more water soluble carbohydrates together with essential vitamins and minerals, a source of nitrogen consisting of amino acids, their amides, esters or salts, protein hydrolysates, or mixtures thereof, and a fat source which may be a fat, fatty acid or fatty acid ester, the composition being admixed with water prior to consumption, A non-toxic emulsifier, such as polyoxyethylene sorbitan mono-oleate is preferably included. The preferred carbohydrate is glucose or glucono - # - lactone. Vitamins may be thiamine HC1, riboflavin, pyridoxin HCl, nicotinamide, inositol, d - Ca - pantothenate, d - biotin, folic acid, ascorbic acid, cyanocobalamin, p - aminobenzoic acid, choline bitartrate, Vitamin A and its acetate, Vitamin D, α - tocopherol and its acetate and menadione. Minerals present include salts containing the ions of Na, K, Fe(ous), Co(ous), Ma(ous), Ca, Mg, Zn, and NH 4 , and also glycerophosphates and fructose - 1,6 - diphosphate. Amino acids may be added as a protein hydrolysate, or preferably individually and include leucine, isoleucine, valine, phenylalanine, arginine mono HC1, histidine mono HC1, alanine, aspartic acid, threonine, proline. glycine, serine, tyrosine ethylester mono HC1, glutamine, methionine and tryptophan.
