An installation for handling freight to or from aircraft 2-4 parked on an apron 1 comprises conveyers 24, 28, 29 for loading and unloading cargo such as pallets or .containers, sorting stations at either side of a vertical array of shelves 8, each having a driven roller conveyer 10 to take cargo from end to end of the shelf, crane installations 21, 33 for transferring cargo to and from the shelves and an installation for lorries 31, 32. The ground floor, Fig. 1, and the upper floor, Fig. 2, for the lower and upper decks of the aircraft have similar installations except that on the ground floor waiting and packing stations are omitted at the lorry installation side. On the upper floor each sorting station comprises oppositely moving transport conveyers 16, 18, and 37, 39, waiting stations 12, 38 having roller conveyers, packing stations 14, 36 and transitional conveyers 20, 35. There are other sorting installations 6 and transport sections 42, 43 on the upper floor, Fig. 2, connect the transport sections 16, 18 and 37, 39 directly.
