[Also in Divisions C1 and C5] Complexes of the form MMSP1/SPX n .Lm where M is Cu, Ag or Au; MSP1/SP is A1, Ga, In, Tl or B; n is valency sum of M and MSP1/SP; m is 1 to 4 and L is an electron-donating ligand molecule capable of forming a co-ordinate bond with M, are made by contacting MSP1/SPX and MX with the ligand under substantially anhydrous conditions. The ligand may be an acetylene, olefin or aromatic hydrocarbon. Where m is 1, L can be more than one species. The ligand moiety is exchangeable with other ligands, and by this means, complexible ligands can be separated from feedstreams containing them (Divisions C1 and C5). Specified complexes are: Complexes of CuA1C1 4 with allene and methyl acetylene are also disclosed. The system may become ionic so that the complex is of the form, e.g. [Cu(L) 4 ]+ [AlCl 4 ]-.
