[Also in Divisions B6 and C4-C5] Hot melt adhesives for book-binding comprise (1) 20 to 40 weight per cent of a copolymer of ethylene with vinyl acetate or an alkyl acrylate, containing 70 to 85 weight per cent of ethylene, (2) 15 to 45 weight per cent of a tackifying resin, (3) 5 to less than 15 weight per cent of polyethylene of density 0À91 to 0À96 g./c.c. and Melt Index 1 to 200 and (4) 10 to 40 weight per cent of a diluent. Specified tackifying resins include rosin and modified rosins, glycerol and pentaerythritol esters thereof, terpene resins, chlorinated polyphenyls, terpene/phenol resins and petroleum hydrocarbon resins. Specified diluents are liquid polybutenes, petroleum waxes, polyethylene greases and waxes, hydrogenated animal and vegetable fats and oils, mineral oils and Fischer-Tropsch waxes. The compositions may also comprise stabilizers, e.g. hindered phenols and hydroxybenzyl phosphonates; pigments, e.g. titanium dioxide and fillers, e.g. talc and clay. Examples describe compositions comprising microcrystalline wax, polyethylene and (I) ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer and pentaerythritol ester of rosin, (II) ethylene/ethyl acrylate copolymer and pentaerythritol ester of rosin, and (III) ethylene/ vinyl acetate copolymer and α-pinene polymer, petroleum hydrocarbon resin or a mixture of penta-erythritol ester of rosin and paraffin wax; and comprising paraffin wax, polyethylene, pentaerythritol ester of rosin, and (V) copolymers of ethylene with isobutyl acrylate or n-butyl acrylate.
