The invention comprises an oxathiin sulphoxide or sulphone of the formula FORM:1099245/C2/1 where X is a carboxamido group and n is 1 or 2. They may be obtained by oxidizing an oxathiin of the formula FORM:1099245/C2/2 suitably with one molar proportion of hydrogen peroxide at 0 DEG to 25 DEG C. to form the sulphoxide of Formula I where n=1 or with at least two molar proportions of hydrogen peroxide at 45-95 DEG C. to form the sulphone of Formula I where n=2. Many examples are given including those in which the substituents on the nitrogen atom of the carboxamido group are hydrocarbon and heterocyclic groups, and hydrocarbon groups substituted by, e.g. halogen, nitro, carboxyl, ether, ester, cyano, carboxamido, halogenoalkyl, sulpho, sulphonamido, hydroxyl and aryl. The above starting materials may be prepared as disclosed in Specification 1,099,244.
