Compositions for use as a coating on a base to form a recording medium comprise a compatible mixture of (1) an organopolysiloxane in which at least 40% of the organic radicals are aryl radicals and (2) an aryl polymer consisting of (a) a polyarylene ether or (b) a polystyrene material or (c) a mixture of (a) and (b). The organopolysiloxane may be of the general formula: FORM:0968689/C3/1 where m is from 1 to 2.1 and each R is a monovalent organic radical at least 40% of the silicon-bonded R radicals being aryl radicals. R may be an alkyl, aryl, cycloalkyl, alkaryl, aralkyl or haloaryl radical. The polyarylene ether may be of the formula -(-W-O-)-q where W is an arylene radical which may be substituted by, for example, alkyl, halogen, alkanyl, aralkyl, aryl or hydrocarbonoxy radicals and q is an integer of at least 10. The polyarylene ether may also be of the formula: FORM:0968689/C3/2 where each A is oxygen, or at least one A is oxygen and at least one other A is isopropylidene, each r is 0, 1, 2 or 3 and B is a t-butyl or a -cumyl radical. The polystyrene material is a polymer or copolymer of styrene, or a polymer or copolymer of a substituted styrene of formula: FORM:0968689/C3/3 where Z is a halogen atom or an alkyl or alkoxy radical and p is 0, 1, 2 or 3. Examples disclose the following compositions in which the phenylene ether polymer has the recurring structural unit: FORM:0968689/C3/4 (1) and (5) diphenylsiloxane, polystyrene, phenylene ether polymer, m-terphenyl and toluene; (2) diphenylpolysiloxane, phenylene ether polymer and toluene; (3) diphenylpolysiloxane, polystyrene and toluene; (4) diphenylpolysiloxane, polystyrene, phenylene ether polymer and toluene; (7) diphenylpolysiloxane, a styrenebutadiene copolymer, xylene and toluene; (8) methylphenylpolysiloxane, a mixture of two polystyrenes, phenylene ether polymer and toluene; and (9) methylphenylpolysiloxane, phenylpolysiloxane, a mixture of polystyrenes and toluene. The diphenylpolysiloxane is prepared by equilibrating octaphenylcyclotetrasiloxane with caesium hydroxide under an atmosphere of nitrogen. The phenylene ether polymer was prepared by passing oxygen into a mixture of 2,6-dimethylphenol, cuprous chloride, pyridine and benzene. This polymer is soluble in benzene, toluene, xylene and chloroform. Specification 902,397 is referred to.
