The mechanism for racking each pattern drum of a circular machine comprises a ring cam 20 encircling the needle cylinder 4 of the machine and continuously rotated independently of the needle cylinder. Consequently the pattern drums are continuously racked both during continuous rotary and reciprocatory knitting. For this purpose drive to the needle cylinder is through bevel gearing 7 and 11 which derives its motion from the continuously rotating gear 8 is reciprocating gear 9 through a clutch 10. The ring cam 20 is driven from its continuous rotating gear 8 though gearing 26... 28 shaft 29 and bevel gearing 32, 33. The gear wheel 33 is freely mounted on the spindle 12 for the bevel gear 11 and is secured to a spur gear 34 which drives a ring gear 23 secured to ring cam 20. The gear wheel 28 is secured to a hub 36 on shaft 29 and is capable of being adjusted relatively thereto to enable the cam ring to be adjusted relative to the needle cylinder.
