A method of making cartoon films comprises interposing movable, flat figures between the camera lens and a light source and photographing the figures through crossed polarizing filters, those parts of the figures which are to be reproduce on the film consisting of one or more optically active material such as cellophane. Outline figures are recorded by making the flat figures opaque with optically-active edging. Transparent figures with transparent joints are covered with optically active material to produce fully visible recorded figures. Colour films are made using opticallyactive material which is coloured, or of several layers which are selectively transmitted by the analyser.
