Diacetals of mesoxaldialdehyde by a process of improved economy and increased yields Cpds. of formula:- (where R1, R2 are the same or different aliphatic, cycloaliphatic oar araliphatic residues) are produced by reacting methylgloyxalacetals CH3COCH(OR1)2 with an alcohol R2OH and with a nitrosation agent in the presence of an acid. Cpds. are starting cpds. for solvents, plasticisers, plastics, perfumes, dyestuffs.
