1,226,310. Fuel elements; detecting neutrons. KERNFORSCHUNG m.b.H. GES. FUER. 13 March, 1970 [19 March, 1969], No. 12143/70. Headings G6C and G6P. The nuclear reactor fuel rods 5 and 8, mounted in the lead cube 3, are subjected to neutron irradiation to determine both the fission fuel and resonant absorber constituents. The neutron beam from generator 1 is directed to the target 2 and the fission neutrons from element 5 are detected by the methane-filled proton recoil counting tubes 6 and the gamma radiation from the absorber material in tube 8 is detected by the gamma counting tubes, 9. The mean energy of the neutrons in the lead, 3, is determined from the known relationship between the time interval after injecting neutrons into the lead and the neutron energy.
