Cotton seed oil extraction giving higher - yields of better quality oil

Shelled kernels with moisture content of 5-10% are (A) comminuted, heated at 60 degrees to 90 degrees C whilst keeping the moisture content at 6-9%, pressing out the oil and extracting the residue with petrol or hexane, or (A') moistening the kernels, heating to 35 degrees C until the gossypol husks are swollen, comminuting and extracting with petrol or benzene. The oil and extract are treated with 0.4 to 0.6% (based on the gossypol content) of an aromatic acid at 60 degrees to 90 degrees C, until at least 80% of the gossypol content is insolubilised. After separating the gossypol deposit, it is extracted with petrol or benzene to remove oil and the extraction agent removed from the gossypol residue, which has uses as an anti-oxidant and polymerisation stopper.
