Composition is obtained from urea, formaldehyde and polyvinyl alcohol in aqueous solution by boiling and aqueous solution of polyvinyl alcohol with formaldehyde at pH =7, until the viscosity of the solution is reduced at the temperature of boiling then adding urea and continuing boiling and finally cooling. The product is water-soluble so that the use of potentially noxious and flammable organic solvents is avoided. After application to a surface to be coated, no "burning-in" is necessary. The coating dries hard within a few minutes and is therefore suitable in continuous high-speed coating processes. Used for coating and pore-filling of surface eg. wood, paper, leather and is applied as an aqueous solution of pH =7.
