1275619 Acrylic acid-polyhydroxy compound copolymers INTERNATIONAL MINERALS & CHEMICAL CORP 25 Aug 1969 [4 Sept 1968] 42330/69 Headings C3G and C3P An acrylic acid-polyhydroxy polymeric compound copolymer or a salt thereof is produced by polymerizing acrylic acid in the presence of 0À1 to 10% by weight of the acid of a compound selected from: (a) chlorohydroxypropyl cellulose, phenylhydroxyethyl cellulose, hydroxybutyl cellulose, hydroxyethyl cellulose, ethyl cellulose, hydroxyethyl methyl cellulose, hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose and carboxymethyl cellulose, (b) starch, (c) chlorohydroxypropyl starch, phenylhydroxyethyl starch, hydroxybutyl starch, hydroxyethyl starch, methyl starch, ethyl starch, hydroxyethyl methyl starch, hydroxypropyl methyl starch and carboxymethyl starch, (d) sugars, (e) causticized lignite, (f) biochemically-synthesized heteropolysaccharides, (g) polyvinyl alcohol, (h) polyalkylene glycols and (i) alkoxy polyalkylene glycols, the polymerization being initiated by ultra-violet light or a water-soluble peroxy compound. The product is obtained in salt form by addition of ammonium hydroxide or an alkali metal hydroxide to the polymer produced. In the examples, the polyhydroxy polymeric compound is carboxymethyl cellulose, a heteropolysaccharide, causticized lignite, sucrose, starch, or polyvinyl alcohol and the product obtained after treatment with sodium hydroxide is used for treating clays used in drilling muds.
