A machine tool comprises a plurality of workholders 3 mounted on a turntable 1 which is indexible to bring the work-holders adjacent successive work stations, the work-holders having at least a workholding portion mounted to float laterally with respect to the carrier and locating means 13 being provided at each station to align the work-holder accurately. Each locating means comprises a rod having a conical end 12 adapted to be advanced by a fluid pressure cylinder and piston 14 into a corresponding recess in the work-holder. The rod 13 may transmit drive from a synchronous electric motor to the work-holder, e.g. to contra-rotate the work relative to the drill 17 or alternatively may index the work-holder to a precise angular position by means of cam and locking surfaces 26, 27 co-operating with pins 10 projecting from the work-holder. The work-holder may be mounted to tilt slightly for correct alignment by the locating means 13. Fluid pressure cylinder and piston means 21 provide for tool feed, drive to the tools being transmitted, e.g., by flexible drive shafts and through the fluid pressure pistons. The indexing drive for the turntable 1 includes ring gear 23.
