Moulded agglomerates of metallurgical coke from variably swelling coals To the pulverised coal, coke or fine-grained minerals can be added. The agglomerates are shaped with a binder by granulation or agglomeration with a very hot fine-grained heat transfer medium. The moulded agglomerates are treated in a 1st phase for 2-5 min., co-current with a transfer medium at 500-600 degrees C, and in a 2nd phase for 30-90 min., counter-current with, or in a stream transverse to, a transfer medium at initially 400-500 degrees C, raised to 500-600 degrees C, and in a 3rd phase counter-current or in transverse flow with a transfer medium at an initial temp. of 550-650 degrees C, later raised to 850-1000 degrees C. Preferably, the transfer medium is sand.
