Metallurgical coke is produced by (a) agglomerating a non-coking coal dust to form pellets or briquettes of smaller size than the end product; (b) mixing the agglomerates with a coking coal dust; and (c) coking the mixt. Up to 70% non-coking coal can be used. Coking can be effected in conventional coking units, in which the productivity is increased by the high density and low moisture content of the agglomerates. The coke-oven gas has a high calorific value (e.g. 4500 Kcal/m3).
