A doped zinc oxide is prepared by vaporizing a zinc oxide which has already been doped, the vaporization being carried out in the presence of a reducing gas and/or an inert gas so that decomposition and reduction of the zinc oxide occurs and burning the vapours of zinc and doping material so produced to form the doped oxide product. Preferably the initial doped oxide is mixed with metallic zinc and contains a higher concentration of doping material than is desired in the final product. The preferred reducing gas is hydrogen and the oxide used is preferably doped with lithium and sodium. The combustion step may be performed in a highly turbulent flame to ensure good mixing. The product may be subjected as a smoke to a thermal after treatment at temperatures of 500-900‹ C. for a time of 10-200 secs. The initial ZnO may be obtained by sintering a mixture of zinc oxide and for example Li2CO3 or Na2CO3. The particle size of the final product is between 0À05 and 0À1 Á.
