Hydrogen is evolved and may be collected in a process for recovering zinc oxide from waste materials containing metallic zinc in which the material is treated with hot zinc chloride solution. The zinc chloride solution is regenerated and used again, any loss of chlorine being made up by adding hydrochloric or sulphuric acid.
