A sizing agent is removed from a fibre coated therewith by applying to the surface of the sized fibre a metal coating and then subjecting the coated fibre to the action of a high-frequency alternating electric current to cause sputtering of the-metal coating together with the coating of the sizing agent and removal of both of the coatings from the fibre. The fibre is preferably a glass fibre and a metal coating of 0.01-0.1 micron thickness may be applied to the sized fibre by decomposition of a gaseous metallic carbonyl. The process may be effected using a high-frequency alternating current generator of frequency exceeding 100,000 cycles/second (Hertz). The desized fibres may subsequently be metallised by decomposition of a gaseous metallic carbonyl.
