In a method of connecting intersecting reinforcement rods whilst lifting and spacing them from underlying shuttering, a combined spacing and lashing element 1 Fig. 1 see Specification No. 1185493 is driven from the lower end of a magazine 11 so that triangular feet 2 of legs 7, 8 of the element 1 pass beneath and cam upwardly the lower of a pair of rods 9, 10, until this rod is forced into a part-circular recess 4 in each leg 7, 8, simultaneously lifting the upper rod 10 of the pair into a space between the legs 7, 8 where, as shown in Fig. 2, it contacts the lower surface of a bridge portion 6 between the upper ends of the legs 7, 8. The magazine 11 forms part of a tool in which an actuating handle 22 or hydraulic actuator H, Fig. 4 is coupled to a lever 16 which at its lower end carries a forked pusher member 15 serving to engage the lower member 1 in the magazine and to drive it into operative position on to the rods 9, 10. A stop 14 carried by the tool engages the rod 9 on the side remote from the tool. The elements 1 may be made of elastic synthetic plastics material.
