A wood/plastic combination is prepared by a process comprising impregnating wood with a liquid consisting essentially of a liquid, polymerizable ethylenically unsaturated organic compound or a mixture of such compounds, optionally containing a dissolved polymer therein and, if desired, a dissolved plasticizer, and/or polymerization accelerator and/or initiator and/or hardener under sub-atmospheric pressure, followed by hardening, wherein after impregnation, the surface of the impregnated wood is treated with an aqueous or alcoholic or aqueous-alcoholic solution of a film former known per se which contains hydrophilic groups and is insoluble in the liquid, polymerizable organic compound and which solution may optionally contain a wetting agent. Specified film formers are waterglass, cellulose, polyamides and polyvinyl alcohol. In Example 1, copper beech is impregnated with methyl methacrylate containing hydroquinone, lauroyl peroxide and diacetyl peroxide, treated with an aqueous ethanolic solution of polyvinyl alcohol and hardened. Example 2 is similar, except that the film former solution comprises a polyamide and isobutanol. In Examples 3 and 4, the wood is treated similarly, except that methyl methacrylate prepolymer is present in the impregnating liquid and the film forming solution comprises water, soda water glass, KOM and a wetting agent, or an aqueous solution of methyl cellulose. Poplar and copper beech are treated in Example 5 with the methyl methacrylate solution of Example 3 and the film forming solution of Example 1.
