In a ballast-packing machine wherein the ballast below two adjacent sleepers 2 is squeezed by rows of oscillating pairs of picks 3-4 detachably mounted in arms 19, 20 and carrying packing plates 25, 24, the picks 4 sharing the same sleeper space are longitudinally offset by bent portions 22 and are overlapped by laterally offsetting the lower ends of arms 20. The pick arms 19 are mounted on pivots 6 hydraulically adjustable on guide rods 7', while 'the pivots 14 of the pick amns 20 are fixed. A common drive shaft 11 has opposed eccentrics engaged by respective straps 10, each strap 10 being pivoted at 9 to the arm 19 of one row of picks and linked through a strokeadjusting piston-cylinder assembly 16-17 to the arms 20 of the other row.
