[Also in Division B3] A machine for reducing and roughing the marginal portion of a shoe upper S comprises an angularly adjustable support 9 for the shoe upper, a roughing wheel 1 in the form of a wire brush driven about a horizontal shaft 3 and having a portion which extends through a slot in the support 9, and a presser roll 22 freely rotatable about an axis lying in the plane of rotation of the wheel 1. The support 9 is provided with adjustable guides 14 for the shoe upper. The roll 22 is carried by a support 21 which is adjustable angularly, heightwise and lengthwise on a bracket 20 which is adjustable widthwise on the support 9. The support 21 has two projections 28, 29 between which the roll 22, which is carried on a pin 30, is mounted. The diameter of the roll 22 is greater at one end of the roll than at the other end, the greatest diameter of the roll is less than the length of the roll, and the lengthwise periphery of the roll corresponds approximately to an arc of the periphery of the wheel 1.
