In apparatus for measuring the consistency of a cereal contained in a tube 1, the cereal is agitated manually by reciprocating a rod 8, in synchronism with pulses emitted by a buzzer and or flashing lamp 7, every other pulse being recorded on a counter 2. After sixty counts i.e. sixty seconds, the agitator is raised to the highest point and let fall. A contact 10 is moved into the fall path of an abutment and formed on the agitator rod 8, so that after a predetermined fall path the contact is actuated to stop the counter and light the lamp 7.
